FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Patricia Chrystycz Gambit Communications, Inc. 978-921-0492 chrystycz@gambitcomm.com Gambit Announces Industry's First Integrated Cable Modem Management Simulation Tool Allows Real World Simulation of Cable Modems and Internetworking Gear Nashua, NH - September 18, 2000 - Allowing cable modem developers and cable companies to finally perform real world, integrated cable and internetworking device simulations, Gambit Communications today introduced the industry's first integrated SNMP and scalable DHCP client simulation tool, the MIMIC(TM) SNMP Agent Simulator 4.40. MIMIC 4.40 allows suppliers of cable modems to design, develop, and test their products in a virtual, scalable, network environment, assuring customers that their cable modems will work properly when deployed across heterogeneous environments. "By integrating cable modem management simulation, Gambit is ahead of the curve in addressing the need for managing converging services," said Dennis Drogseth, director, Enterprise Management Associates. "EMA dialog with users shows that MIMIC can accelerate time to market as well as cutting costs for management software developers. This breadth of support will be a welcome addition for many Service Providers." Gambit is working with cable modem vendors to help implement a testing program framework for DOCSIS (data over cable system interface) standards along with extension to testing of OSS, including provisioning requirements of packet over cable for voice over IP services. Each of these areas can take advantage of the new features implemented in MIMIC 4.40, including: - Scalable DHCP Support - JAVA Toolkit control and customize simulated devices - Telnet protocol support - Graphical visualization of statistics for supported protocols - this helps the user to quantitatively see how the management applications work with agents over a period of time. MIMIC 4.40 can be used by cable modem vendors to inexpensively demo, test, develop, train and certify their modems in an internetworking environment without purchasing all the equipment and maintaining labs for those functions. By simulating the SNMP and DHCP protocol modules of scores of cable modems, MIMIC provides vendors with extensive environments of virtual devices with which to test product capabilities and assure product quality. Cable providers can use MIMIC to simulate the 1000s of households that use cable modems to assure the scalability of cable management software. In addition, providers can also use MIMIC for large scale OSS system testing deployments in place of large banks of Cable Modems, which would be cost prohibitive. MIMIC 4.40 will be available in late October and will be demonstrated at N+I Atlanta in booth number 8139 and before the show at the JP Davis Press One media reception (contact www.jpdavis.com/press for an invitation). About MIMIC MIMIC provides an inexpensive way for enterprises, device vendors, management software developers, and outsourcers to demo, test, develop, train and certify SNMP-based management applications without purchasing equipment and maintaining labs for those functions. MIMIC has the ability to simulate up to 10,000 SNMP-based devices from one workstation. MIMIC simulations can be distributed over multiple platforms for enterprise simulation testing of even larger environments. It includes user-friendly wizards for importing new MIBs, recording large networks, creating device simulations and network topologies, and provides full support for SNMP v1, v2, and v3 as well as RMON1 and RMON2. MIMIC's over 100 customers include Nortel, Cisco, Computer Associates, HP, IBM, Riversoft, MCI, Lucent, Marconi, Alcatel, Quallaby, Veritas, InfoVista, Fujitsu, Intel, and Ericsson. About Gambit Founded in 1995, Gambit Communications, Inc. is the leader in providing SNMP-based network management tools that enhance the productivity of network management developers and enterprise users while lowering their costs. Gambit's SNMP agent simulation tool, MIMIC, records SNMP agents, then "plays back" simulations for use in applications from development and testing to operator training and disaster simulations.
